About Yala National Park

Yala National Park, located in the south-eastern region of Sri Lanka along the Indian Ocean, is one of the country’s oldest protected wildlife reserves. Established as a national park in 1938, Yala covers nearly 979 square kilometres and is known for its wildlife, diverse landscapes, and one of the world’s highest leopard densities.

The park features forests, grasslands, lagoons, wetlands, rocky outcrops, and coastal landscapes that support a wide range of wildlife. Yala is divided into several blocks, with areas such as Block 1 and Block 5 open to visitors for safari experiences and wildlife exploration.
